Qualifying Race - Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Rankings: The 2019 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon will have an added level of prestige when it serves as a qualifying event for the Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Rankings. Click here for all the details. We’re excited to give our everyday champions – our age group winners – a little extra incentive to join us in 2019.
Course Time Limit Extended: When the gun goes off for our 2019 race on Sunday, October 20, the last athlete will cross the Start Line at approximately 8 a.m.
From that point, 1/2 Marathoners will have the usual 4 hours to complete their 13.1-mile journey (an 18 minute-per-mile pace), with the 1/2 Marathon course closing at Noon.
Following this same starting timeline, participants in our 40thannual Marathon will have 6 ½ hours to run or walk the 26.2-mile route (a 14:54 minute-per-mile pace), with the course closing at 2:30 p.m. This change adds 30 minutes to our course closure time from 2018. While providing people a little more time to finish the race, this still allows us to clean up water stops and drive street sweepers along the route before regular traffic resumes. The communities we pass through are extremely supportive and understanding, and we work hard to return their neighborhoods to them in as timely a manner as possible!
A Special 40th Anniversary Announcement: We are very pleased to announce that all registrants for the 2019 edition of our Marathon will receive a long-sleeved Nike 1/4 zip pullover shirt! Our athletes’ dedication to this event since 1980 has made the 40th anniversary celebration possible. As a thank you to our marathon athletes and community, we wanted to do something very special for those choosing to take up the challenge of 26.2 miles!
We love our ½ Marathon athletes, too! Those taking part in the 14th running and walking of the ½ Marathon will receive a stylish short-sleeved shirt to mark their participation in the big event!
Whichever distance you choose, we’re excited to have all of you join us!
Your 2019 Finisher Medals! If you finish our 2019 Marathon or ½ Marathon, you will earn something that no one who completed the first, second or even third Columbus Marathon received: That’s right, history buffs, the first medals weren’t issued to finishers until the 1984 race!
This year’s Marathon medal features showcases our 40th anniversary, complete with a ring of stars for every year from 1980 to 2019. The 1/2 Marathon medal includes our event colors of orange and blue with a nod to conquering the 13.1-mile challenge we have presented since 2006.
The ribbons for both distances include the event logo and colors, their respective ages of 40 and 14, and our 2019 theme word, “Enduring,” representing the tireless support of tens of thousands of volunteers and the hard work of nearly 300,000 finishers in our races over the years!
We look forward to bestowing these awards upon each of our finishers on race day!
Celebratory Enhancements for Marathon Miles 14 - 26: In March we announced we were working to make the “back half” of our Marathon more exciting for 2019. We get it – the first half features the awesome start line experience, the route passes by Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and nearly two-thirds of our runners and walkers do the ½ Marathon; when they split off and head to the finish at mile 12.5, they take a lot of energy with them.
We can’t shorten the race (despite our “April Fool’s Day” joke of making it 40 kilometers instead of 42K), but we’ll be making Miles 14-26 special as a way of saying thanks for helping us get to the “Big 4-0.”
Step 1 – There will be more entertainment through The Ohio State University campus, Upper Arlington and Grandview Heights. Bonus: We will focus on music from the years 1980 to 2019 to stick with the spirit of our 40 years! Science shows that music eases muscle strain (well if science doesn’t show that, it should).
Step 2 – Your name and message on the big screen! We will link our timing chip technology with a large screen to display your name and a message you can create for extra motivation! This is done at Ironman events, and those crazy people get so excited they swim and bike, too! We’ll set up a special message center at the Expo race weekend where you can upload your words of inspiration, giving you all spring and summer to come up with something great!
Step 3 – Snacks! We’ll set up several “Sweet & Salty Stations” to go with the one we already have on King Avenue at the Go Fitness water stop! You know you’ll go that extra mile for gummies, licorice, chips or soda, and hey, you’ll have earned it.
